Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Nazca Lines and why are they mysterious?

The Nazca Lines are enormous geoglyphs etched into the desert floor of southern Peru by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE. They consist of hundreds of lines, geometric shapes, and stylised figures of animals and plants — including a 93-metre hummingbird, a 180-metre monkey, and a 46-metre spider. The lines are only fully visible from the air, which is why they were not rediscovered until the 1920s when aircraft began flying over the region. Their purpose remains debated by archaeologists.

What are the Ballestas Islands and what wildlife will I see?

The Ballestas Islands are a group of rocky islands off the Paracas coast, sometimes called the "Poor Man's Galápagos." They host enormous colonies of Humboldt penguins, Peruvian boobies, cormorants, pelicans, red-footed boobies, and thousands of sea lions on the rocks and beaches. The 2-hour boat tour circles the islands closely, providing excellent wildlife observation and photography opportunities. You may also spot dolphins on the open water transit. No landing on the islands is permitted to protect the wildlife.

How long is the Nazca Lines flight?

The overflight lasts approximately 35–45 minutes and covers the main geoglyphs including the hummingbird, monkey, spider, condor, astronaut figure, hands, whale, and various geometric lines and trapezoids. Small planes with 6–8 passengers fly low over the lines so all figures are clearly visible. The pilot banks the plane so passengers on both sides can see each figure. Some passengers experience mild airsickness due to the banking manoeuvres — bring a small airsickness bag just in case.

What is the Paracas National Reserve?

The Paracas National Reserve is a 335,000-hectare protected area on the Pacific coast encompassing both land and sea. The landscape is dramatic — red desert cliffs dropping to turquoise ocean, flamingo lagoons, and vast empty beaches. The reserve protects a rich marine ecosystem and significant pre-Inca archaeological sites including the Candelabra geoglyph (visible from the sea). The dramatic Cathedral rock formation and Playa Roja (Red Beach, with its naturally red sand from volcanic rock) are highlights of the reserve drive.

Is the flight over the Nazca Lines safe?

Nazca overflight operations are regulated by the Peruvian Civil Aviation Authority. We use licensed, reputable operators with maintained aircraft and experienced pilots. The flights take place in small Cessna or similar aircraft. Weather conditions are checked before each flight and flights are rescheduled if conditions are unsafe. The region has a very stable, dry climate with minimal wind, making flights reliable. However, flying in small aircraft at low altitude does involve inherent motion and some passengers experience mild nausea.

Can this 3-day tour be combined with other Peru tours?

Yes — this Nazca and Paracas extension is designed to combine with our Lima-based tours. It is typically added at the beginning or end of a Cusco and Machu Picchu itinerary. You travel south from Lima on Day 1 and return to Lima on Day 3, from where you can either depart internationally or continue to Cusco for the next tour segment. We handle all logistics between the two tours seamlessly.

What is the travel from Lima to Paracas like?

Private transport from Lima to Paracas covers approximately 260 km (162 miles) along the Pan-American Highway. The journey takes about 3.5–4 hours through increasingly arid desert landscape with Pacific Ocean glimpses on the right. Private transport is comfortable and air-conditioned. We pick you up from your Lima hotel and drop you at your Paracas hotel directly.

What is the best time of year for this Nazca and Paracas tour?

The south coast of Peru has a stable, dry climate year-round. From May to October a marine fog layer (known as "garúa") sometimes makes mornings grey in Paracas, though it usually burns off. Nazca is one of the driest and sunniest places on earth regardless of season. The Nazca Lines flights operate year-round with very high reliability. December to April offers the best wildlife viewing on the Ballestas Islands as penguin and sea lion breeding seasons are in full swing.

What Our Travellers Say

★★★★★

I am a sceptic by nature and approached the Nazca Lines as a tourist box-tick. The flight completely changed my mind. From 300 metres up, looking down at figures that could only have been designed for an aerial view by people who had no aircraft, the mystery becomes very real and very affecting. The Ballestas sea lions were a bonus highlight — ridiculously photogenic.

★★★★☆

The Paracas National Reserve drive was more beautiful than I expected — the red cliffs dropping into bright blue Pacific water looked like another planet. Flamingos in the lagoons, condors overhead, the strange Cathedral rock. The Nazca flight the next morning was short but unforgettable. Great combination for a 3-day coastal Peru experience.

★★★★★

The tour operator's logistics were seamless — from Lima hotel pickup to the Ballestas boat, Paracas drive, overnight in Nazca, and the dawn flight. The pilot was a superb narrator, naming each geoglyph as we banked over it. I felt no airsickness despite warnings. The monkey figure is the most impressive — its tail curls on for 80 metres. A truly remarkable addition to any Peru itinerary.

★★★★★

Added this to the start of a Cusco and Machu Picchu trip and it was the perfect opening to two extraordinary weeks in Peru. The Ballestas Islands boat tour is an incredible wildlife experience — Humboldt penguins standing on rocks metres from a sea lion rookery. The Nazca Lines from the air left me with genuine questions I am still thinking about. Highly recommended as a stand-alone experience or Peru trip extension.
